What is Music?

The American Heritage Dictionary defines music as follows:

mu-sic:

noun

The art of arranging sounds in time so as to produce a continuous, unified, and evocative composition, as through melody, harmony, rhythm, and timbre.

 

Kind of a technical and antiseptic description for something that has so much power.

Music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. It began with listening, then playing and writing, and now includes recording, producing, and performing. So look around, and see if I can help you make some music, too!

Guitar Lessons

I have taught many people to play guitar. They ranged from complete beginners who had never picked up a guitar to those with some experience, but wanted to learn more.

I do not believe in simply sitting someone down with a book to teach scales and chords. Playing guitar is about making music. Every person is different and has differing goals and abilities. So I will tailor your lessons to what you want to achieve.

What I'll teach:

  • Basics... tuning, re-stringing (if needed).
  • How music works... why and how notes work together to become chords. Some of it is theory, some of it is just what sounds good.
  • Technique... playing notes, strumming chords, fingerpicking, using a pick
  • Timing... a metronome can always help, but 'feeling' the timing is irreplaceable.
  • Reading music... whether it be standard music notation or guitar specific 'tablature,' knowing how to read music will benefit you for years to come.

Recording Studio

Mixing Console

Are you a musician / singer/songwriter / performer who wants to create a demo CD? Or do you want to make a CD to send to friends and family? I can help bring your ideas to reality!

I have a mini-studio that can produce some very professional sounding recordings. For examples, go to the Rick -n- James page and listen to some of the songs. These were created and recorded right here.

I can easily work with individuals or small groups. Full bands with accoustic drums may be a challenge, but not out of the question. Contact me to discuss the specifics.

Charges for recording time and post production work vary by the project and the number of 'retakes' to get the sound "just right." A rule of thumb cost is around $35/hour.

After recording your songs, you will recieve a standard audio CD that you can copy and send out yourself, or have professionally duplicated/replicated. If you are interested in the latter, see the "Demo CD Prep" tab above.

Performing

Performing is what it is all about. Whether you are playing for yourself, for friends, or in front of a large crowd, making music and sharing it is fun.

I have taken a bit of a break from public venues, but will be returning to the stage soon. I will post dates here when they are scheduled.



Private Performances

If you would like a personal performance, I can be talked into playing at parties, weddings, or other events. I play a mix of 'cover' and original songs. If you are looking for head-banging, then you are probably not looking for me! If you like softer side old classics like Simon and Garfunkel or newer things like REM, then you're looking in the right place. Click on the 'Contact Me' tab to schedule your event.

Demo CD Preparation

OK, so you have a CD with music you have created! Now what? Do you want to make a nice label and cover for a few to give to family? Or do you want to make enough to give (or sell!) to everyone you know? Do you want 'bare-bones' or full blown artwork, professionally packaged in 'shrinkwrap?'

Whatever the answer is, I can help.

I am adept at using several types of graphic design software, including Adobe Illustrator. Illustrator files are the preferred file type for many large CD duplication/replication companies.

Slide Conversion

 

Do you (or maybe your parents) have boxes of slides stashed away in a closet somewhere? If your parents were anything like mine, they took a whole lot of pictures while I was growing up. Most of these pictures were on slides. And when was the last time you saw a slide projector for sale in one of the 'box stores'?

So converting the slides to digital pictures for the PC not only was a great trip down memory lane, but now everyone in the family can have their own copy of the pictures.

Or maybe you've lost a picture, but still have the negative and would love to have access to the picture again. I can convert slides or negatives into digital pictures and hand them to you on a CD or DVD. Not only is it a great way to share these memories, but it also helps preserve them.

I have done a number of home improvement projects ranging from changing lightswitches, to ceiling fans to remodelling a bathroom to completely gutting and rebuilding a kitchen. The before and after pictures are shown below. I am fairly handy and am familiar with:

I am NOT a certified or licensed Contractor, Electrician, Plumber, etc. I know how to do quite a few things, and am rather good at them, but I am NOT "CERTIFIED or LICENSED." If you need a Licensed Contractor, then I am not your guy.
